Old Donation Church has a rich, long history, beginning in the Colonial period with prayers held in Adam Thorowgood's parlor before 1637, with some histories reporting this occurring as early as 1635.
We are Virginia Beach's first church, being formally organized as the Lynnhaven Parish Church (Anglican - Church of England).
Some point out that our parish has survived floods, fires, several wars, temporary abandonment, and schisms, and yet here we are 376+ years later, a vibrant, Spirit-filled, active parish with over 900 members still doing God's work in this part of Virginia.
With a church building on the National Register of Historic Places and a congregation consisting of people of all ages and experiences from all over the globe, worship that is ancient and contemporary, Old Donation is more than an historical museum. It is proof that God is present, and sustains the life of faithful people in their ministry and mission.
On the following pages you will find some interesting pieces of our history catalogued and described. You will also find Old Donation Church mentioned in most of the histories compiled about Lynnhaven County or Virginia Beach.
If you have additions to share, please send your contributions to our office (firstname.lastname@example.org) because we are always learning more about the richness and breadth of who we are, and who we have been. Here is a link to a fairly detailed history that you may enjoy. It includes many interesting anecdotal stories about our past and present.
